IPD Group & CMI Electrical: Expanding Possibilities

Since joining IPD Group, CMI Electrical has gained access to broader capabilities, deeper resources, and stronger supplier relationships. Find out how this integration is delivering more value to industrial and infrastructure customers across Australia.

In late 2023, CMI Electrical officially joined the IPD Group, one of Australia’s leading suppliers of electrical and automation products. The acquisition—completed in early 2024—marks a new chapter for both businesses and significantly strengthens the service and product offering available to CMI’s customers.

For more than 20 years, CMI has built a reputation for supplying robust, reliable electrical products built for demanding industrial environments—particularly in mining, tunnelling, infrastructure, and energy. Now, with the backing of IPD Group, CMI gains access to enhanced engineering support, a broader product portfolio, and stronger supply chain infrastructure.

“CMI Electrical has an excellent legacy of service and product expertise in industrial cable systems and connection technologies,” said Michael Sainsbury, CEO of IPD Group. “Bringing them into the Group expands our national capability and allows us to offer customers even more value through integrated solutions, deeper technical support, and faster delivery.”

This move also brings CMI customers closer to global brands already represented by IPD, as well as enabling strategic partnerships like the recent Ellis Patents distribution agreement.

What this means for customers:

  • Wider product range: Access to IPD’s full portfolio across circuit protection, switchgear, automation, and more
  • Stronger technical support: Shared engineering and application knowledge across both businesses
  • Enhanced logistics: National warehousing and improved delivery timelines
  • Project synergy: Ability to deliver more complete solutions across power, protection, and connectivity

“Joining IPD Group has already opened doors for us,” said Adam Jones, Managing Director of CMI Electrical.
“It’s helped accelerate product development, broaden our access to global technology partners, and most importantly, improve how we support our customers across large-scale projects.”

From a customer perspective, the integration is seamless—CMI continues to operate under its own brand and maintains its specialist product focus, but with the added strength, reach, and innovation support of a large national group.

Together, IPD and CMI are now better positioned than ever to support Australia’s energy transition—delivering solutions that are smarter, safer, and more sustainable.
